Events & Activities

A look at the talks, observing sessions, visits, and public outreach events we run throughout the year.

Regular Observing Nights

We hold observing sessions throughout the year, weather permitting. These evenings offer a relaxed opportunity to look through a variety of telescopes, share knowledge, and learn practical observing skills. Beginners and visitors are always welcome.

Monthly Talks & Presentations

Our monthly meetings feature guest speakers and society members presenting on a wide range of astronomical topics — from planetary exploration and space science to deep‑sky imaging. Talks are suitable for all experience levels.

Outreach & Special Events

We regularly take part in public outreach activities, astronomy festivals, and visits to observatories and local venues. These events help us share our passion for astronomy with the wider community.

What We’ve Been Up To

Messier Marathon March 2026

Members of the society enjoyed a successful event with good home made food and great company. A clear night allowed several members to set up their telescopes and attempt to find as many of the 110 Messier deep sky objects as they could.

Visit to the South West AstroFair (June 2025)

Members of the society visited the South West AstroFair at the Norman Lockyer Observatory, Sidmouth. Displays, trade stands, and planetarium shows offered plenty to explore throughout the day.

The final talk, “The Sky at Night”, was delivered by Professor Chris Lintott and provided fascinating insights into current developments in astronomy and the plans for the new Vera C. Rubin telescope. An inspiring and memorable event for everyone who attended.

Guest Speaker: Paul Fellows (June 2025)

We were delighted to welcome Paul Fellows as our guest speaker. His talk offered an exciting and accessible look into the search for other suns like our own, and what recent discoveries mean for understanding our place in the universe. We hope to invite him back for another presentation in the future.

Partial Solar Eclipse Observation (March 2025)

Members of the society joined the public outside the Barnstaple Museum to observe the Partial Solar Eclipse using specialist solar‑safe equipment. It was a fantastic opportunity to share the event with the local community and demonstrate safe observing techniques.
